The Google Pixel 3a was one of our favorite smartphones from 2019, thanks to its marriage of Google's class-leading photography skills with stock Android, good design, and a low price.

Launched in May, the phone was so popular it helped to double Google's total Pixel phone sales compared to the previous year. Now, it looks like Google is preparing to launch its successor, likely to be called the Pixel 4a.

The renders you see here come from Steve McFly, who uses the Twitter handle OnLeaks and is a highly regarded technology leaker; the images were published in partnership with 91mobiles, and are based on information OnLeaks has received about the handset from industry sources.

The images show a phone which has a screen of around 5.7 or 5.8 inches, making it slightly larger than the Pixel 3a. Despite the larger screen, the overall measurements are down slightly on the Pixel 3a, at a claimed 144 x 66 x 8.2 mm.

That display has no notch, and instead there is a hole-punch front facing camera setup; no notch means the phone will not feature the same Project Soli radar technology used by the Pixel 4 to spot when your hand reaches to pick it up.

That hole-punch camera is joined by a rear camera system with a single lens set into a square mount similar to that of the Pixel 4. There are no further details on the rear camera just yet.

With no face-scanning technology on the front, it looks like the Pixel 4a will be unlocked using a fingerprint scanner; backing this up, the renders show a circular scanner on the rear of the phone. Power and volume buttons sit on the right edge of the handset, and there is even a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is becoming increasingly rare on new smartphones.

The Pixel 4a will likely launch at Google's I/O developer conference, which usually takes place in May. The Pixel 4a is set to go up against a new mid-range iPhone expected from Apple in the first half of 2020, tipped to be called the SE 2. Both phones will likely cost in the region of $400.
