Capital Hill gives self-driving cars a supercharged boost
Self-driving boost Lawmakers gave support to having more self-driving cars on the road, after a U.S. House of Representatives panel voted to move ahead with a proposal that would place 100,000 more vehicles on U.S. highways. The proposal still needs to go before the full U.S. House of Representatives. But the vote shows significant interest in autonomous technology.
Under the proposal, states would not be allowed to ban self-driving cars from their streets, and carmakers would submit safety testing results directly to U.S. regulators.
Companies including Tesla, Alphabet, General Motors and Ford Motor Co. have advocated for Congress to step in and prevent states from limiting or preventing cars with self-driving technology from being tested in their areas. The proposal is far from a law, and will have to wait until the U.S. House of Representatives meets again in September. (Via Reuters)
