Video shows the moment self-driving Uber hits pedestrian
Tempe Police have released the video showing the moments before 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg was hit by a self-driving Uber. The video shows both the external camera angle and the internal camera angle, with the safety driver, seated in the passenger seat, in view.
The fatal accident took place at 10 pm on March 19, as Herzberg was pushing a bicycle across the road in Tempe, AZ. She is believed to be the first person killed by a self-driving car. Uber has halted all tests of its autonomous vehicles since the accident. Toyota has since stopped testing its own self-driving cars as well.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating the accident, examining the Uber, which appears to be significantly damaged according to a photo NTSB posted on its Twitter feed. The Tempe Police Vehicular Crimes Unit is looking into the accident as well. Tempe Police released the video just two days after the accident.
