Hardwired installation of TESSAN 48A 240V Level 2 EV Charger does require a professional electricianGearBrain

For our testing of the TESSAN 48A 240V Level 2 EV Charger, we needed to hire a licensed electrician to handle the installation. Unless you're a licensed electrician or have significant experience with home electrical work, this is not a DIY project. One of the key challenges with this charger is that the 48A model is hardwired rather than plug-in, which means professional installation is essential, not only to ensure the charger functions properly but also to comply with local electrical codes and maintain a safe setup. Before any installation begins, it’s crucial to turn off the main power supply to avoid electrical hazards. The high amperage of this unit requires careful wiring and proper circuit breaker configuration, making professional assistance not only recommended but also necessary.

Installation Steps

  1. Determine Installation Location:
    • Indoor/Outdoor Use: The charger is IP65-rated, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations.
    • Accessibility: Ensure the location allows the 25-foot cable to reach your vehicle's charging port comfortably.
  2. Electrical Panel Assessment:
    • Circuit Breaker: Install a 60-amp double-pole breaker to accommodate the charger's 48A continuous load, adhering to the 80% rule for continuous loads.
    • Wiring: Use appropriate wire gauges, such as 6 AWG copper THHN or 4 AWG aluminum THHN, based on the installation specifics and local code requirements. Home Improvement Stack Exchange
  3. Mounting the Charger:
    • Wall Mounting: Secure the charger to the wall using the provided mounting bracket and hardware. Ensure it's mounted at a convenient height for daily use.
    • Cable Management: Utilize the integrated cable holder to keep the charging cable organized and off the ground.
  4. Hardwiring the Unit:
    • Conduit Installation: Run the appropriate conduit from the electrical panel to the charger location, following NEC and local code requirements.
    • Connecting Wires: Connect the wires to the charger's terminal block as per the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring all connections are secure.
    • Grounding: Properly ground the charger to prevent electrical faults.
  5. Final Checks and Power-Up:
    • Inspection: Have the installation inspected by a qualified professional to ensure compliance with all codes and safety standards.
    • Power On: Once approved, turn on the power at the main panel and test the charger to ensure it's functioning correctly.

App Configuration

  • Download the TESSAN App: Available on both iOS and Android platforms.
  • Connect via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth: Follow the in-app instructions to pair your charger.
  • Set Charging Schedules: Utilize the app to schedule charging during off-peak hours, monitor energy consumption, and adjust charging settings as needed.

Alternative Option

If hardwiring isn't feasible, TESSAN offers a 40A version of the Level 2 EV Charger equipped with a NEMA 14-50 plug, allowing for easier installation. However, this model delivers slightly less power compared to the 48A version.

How much does a TESSAN 48A 240V Level 2 EV Charger cost?

The TESSAN 48A 240V Level 2 EV Charger has an MSRP of $489.99 and is available on the company site and Amazon. Is this a reasonable price? It is based on our research and knowledge of the EV charger market. The TESSAN 48A 240V Level 2 EV Charger is priced at $349.99 on Amazon, notably lower than its original MSRP of $489.99. This price point positions it competitively within the market for high-amperage, hardwired EV chargers.

Compared to similar models, such as the ChargePoint Home Flex (priced around $549) and the EVIQO 48A charger (approximately $499), the TESSAN charger offers comparable features at a more affordable price. It delivers up to 11.5 kW of power, includes a 25-foot cable, and provides smart app control via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It also boasts IP65-rated water and fire resistance, making it suitable for indoor and outdoor installations.

However, it's important to note that the 48A model requires hardwiring, so it requires professional installation. Installation costs can vary, but many users report expenses ranging from $400 to $1,100, depending on factors like the distance from the electrical panel and local labor rates. While this adds to the overall investment, the charger's performance and features can justify the total cost for many users.

TESSAN offers a 40A version with a NEMA 14-50 plug for those seeking a plug-in alternative, which may reduce installation complexity and cost.

In summary, at its current price, the TESSAN 48A Level 2 EV Charger presents a strong value proposition for EV owners looking for a high-performance, feature-rich charging solution.

What we learned from Testing so far:

After spending some time testing the TESSAN Level 2 EV Charger at one of our homes, a few standout features have made a strong impression.

First, the 25-foot charging cord has proven incredibly convenient. It gives us flexibility when positioning the vehicle for charging, especially in tighter or more awkward outdoor setups. This extended reach really helps when your charging station isn’t installed directly in front of your parking spot.

We also appreciate the smart app control, which adds a layer of convenience and efficiency. Being able to manage charging schedules through the app has helped us take advantage of off-peak electricity hours, reducing energy costs and maximizing usage efficiency in our test home.

The unit includes a SAE J1772 connector compatible with nearly all electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles manufactured in North America. It even works with Tesla vehicles, as long as you have the proper adapter (sold separately). Whether you drive a Chevrolet Bolt EV, Volvo Recharge, Polestar, Hyundai Kona or Ioniq, Kia Niro, or Nissan LEAF, this charger has you covered.

Another major plus is its IP65 water and fire resistance, which provides peace of mind, especially since we installed the charger outdoors at our test location. This level of protection makes the TESSAN a solid choice for open-air installations, offering durability against rain, snow, and other harsh conditions.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

One challenge we encountered was that this particular model comes hardwired, not with a NEMA 14-50 plug, which meant we had to hire a qualified electrician to complete the installation. If you're uncomfortable with electrical work or don't already have a compatible setup, this adds an extra cost and step to your setup. TESSAN does offer a 40A version with a NEMA plug, but keep in mind that option doesn’t deliver the full 48 amps like this hardwired model. And charging times are not as fast.

As we go through our testing of this EV charger, we will update this section and provide more insights and tips for you to know before you buy.
