Samsung The Premiere: A laser projector big enough for a small cinema experience
Samsung unveiled a new laser projector big enough that some may feel they could bypass having a TV at all. Sitting on the floor, the projector is designed to sit right in front of a wall or screen, and even has fabric finishes to help it blend more easily into living room spaces. The projector also has built-in woofers and an Acoustic Beam surround sound, which means it can work as a standalone device, without the need for additional speakers.
The new 4K laser projector projects directly on a wall, and will come in two sizes, a 130-inch model, called the LSP9T, an the 120-inch model, called the LSP7T. Samsung say the larger size is the first HDR10+ certified projector with triple laser technology in the world, and can reach peak brightness of up to 2,800 ANSI lumens.
Both versions have a feature called Filmmaker Mode, and can tap into Samsung's Smart TV platform, which works on all of its TV screens, which support streaming media apps. They can also allow people to mirror content via mobile devices.
People are using outdoor projectors to extend their living spaces, certainly during the summer months — and certainly since most have started to spend more time at home amid the coronavirus. However, Samsung's The Premiere seems designed more for interior spaces, unlike it's weatherproof TV and sound bar, the Terrace.
The company has yet to release a price — or even a release date, just saying that they would begin to start selling the device in the U.S., Europe, Korea and other areas later in 2020.
"Over the past few months, we have seen how consumers are spending more time at home and how the role of everyday life continues to change. TV has become the center of entertainment, a fitness partner, a co-worker and a source for news," said Jongsuk Chu, executive vice president of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, in a statement. "The Premiere re-imagines the home cinema experience with an all-new, compact design, 4K picture quality and big sound for tight spaces that can be used for any at-home activity and living room arrangements."
