Is the $49.99 price for a one-pack reasonable for a smart leak detector? Based on my experience, the price for a smart leak detector, like the Moen Smart Leak Detector, is sensible and competitive if you want a leak detection device that comes with additional advanced features like Wi-Fi connectivity, humidity and temperature monitoring, and integration with other smart home devices like Amazon Alexa, which many of the lower-priced smart leak detectors don't offer.

When comparing prices, similar devices like the Phyn Smart Water Sensor,Aqara Water Leak Detector with the Aqara Hub, or FIBARO's FGBHFS-101 Flood, Water & Temperature Sensor Homekit enabled water leakage detector are priced similarly, around $49.99 to $59.99. Other brands, like the Samsung SmartThings Water Leak Sensor or Abode water leak sensor, can range from $25 to $35 for a single leak detector but can be integrated into a smart home security system like Abode or Samsung SmartThings ecosystem.

Given the Moen detector's robust feature set, including environmental monitoring (temperature and humidity), Alexa integration, and app control, $49.99 is a good price for a smart leak detector in this category, especially compared to other higher-end models. However, cheaper options are available if you are looking for basic leak detection without extra features.

Test results for Moen Smart Leak Detector

I tested the Moen Smart Leak Detector at home with a standard Wi-Fi connection for four weeks to see how it would work. We moved it around the house to see how well it would connect with our home Wi-Fi network. Here is what I liked and didn't like after testing:

What I Liked: I appreciated how easy the Moen Smart Leak Detector was to set up and seamlessly integrate with other Moen Smart Water Products, like the smart faucets, Flow Smart Water Shutoff, and Smart Sump Pump Monitor. The full suite of Moen products helps protect the home from water damage, offering comprehensive coverage no matter where an issue could arise. I also liked the extra functionality of the Moen detector, as it monitors temperature and humidity, something many lower-priced detectors don’t offer. This feature helps prevent freezing pipes or overheating in the attic during hot summers. The included extension cable adds versatility, and it works reliably on a Wi-Fi connection without any signal issues. Its compatibility with Amazon Alexa was a great touch for voice control.

What I Didn’t Like: While it works well with Alexa, it lacks integration with Google Assistant or other voice assistants, which could limit its appeal to non-Alexa users. I also missed seeing compatibility with broader smart home ecosystems like Apple HomeKit or Samsung SmartThings. Additionally, it would have been nice to see integration with a smart thermostat, like the Honeywell Smart Thermostat T9 or Nest Thermostat, to offer a more unified home monitoring system. Lastly, a single unit's price is relatively high, especially compared to other brands offering more basic leak detectors in multi-packs at a lower cost. While Moen’s features justify the price, it may not appeal to those looking for a basic leak detector.

Overall, I found the Moen Smart Leak Detector easy to use and appreciated its extended coverage with the cord, making it a solid choice for homeowners looking for more than just a leak detector.
