Drop testing the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
Shattered glass Dropping an iPhone is an experience many have had — and few want to repeat. A jagged cracked screen is the hallmark of iPhone ownership. With Apple's iPhone 8 covered in glass back to front, the possibility of having a handful of shards now doubles.
So EverythingApplePro decided to do the only thing that made sense: drop the iPhone 8 many (many) times to see just how durable, or not, the smartphone is, or is not. With just two days to go until pre-orders start for the iPhone X, the only new Apple smartphone available is the 8 and 8 Plus. So comparing them to the iPhone 7 Plus seemed like a good idea.
So how did they all fare? The video is below, but in short the iPhone 8 Plus is pretty solid, if dropped from a low height. From about waist high, the iPhone 8 landed on its face, side and back (yes, we feel sick too just thinking about it) and survived. A slight dent, but nothing shattered: even when it dropped face down. The iPhone 7 Plus? The screen was a goner after one drop on its back.
But when dropping the iPhone 8 Plus from a higher height — about six to seven feet — the back shattered into the familiar spiderweb pattern. Yes, the back. That's now covered in glass. You can see more below in the full video. But with a new surface to worry about shattering, those buying these latest releases may want to give some serious thought to how they carry their smartphones, and how they'll be handling them in the future.
