How To Install Kevo Smart Lock
One thing many consumers find when they begin to buy, install and link up connected devices in their smart home, is that the process can be difficult. It's not as turnkey as everyone hopes the process may be. However, we have found a connected device that's not just easy to setup and install—but includes interactive, simple instructions.
Kwikset, a manufacturer of smart locks, has some of the most effective instructions on setting-up their gadgets, and they're all housed right in the app. To demonstrate how intuitive its instructions are installing their smart lock, we assembled a step-by-step slide show, using Kwikset's Kevo 2nd Generation, which GearBrain believes is one of the best smart locks on the market. Clicking on each slide in order, will show you how easy it is to follow Kwikset's instructions for installing the smart lock, streamlining the process for consumers.
Installing Kevo Smart Lock
First, unbox your Kevo smart lock and make sure you have all the parts needed to install your Kevo lock.
When you download the Kevo app, it will ask you to choose either Kwikset or Weiser. You will need to select Kwikset since Kevo falls under the Kwikset brand.
Choose your Kevo Product to Install
You will need to select the Kevo product you plan to install. For this demonstration, we are installing a 2nd Generation Kevo smart lock.
Choose Type of Instructions
In this step of the installation, Kevo offers you the opportunity to either use an interactive guide to help you install your Kevo smart lock or a PDF. We recommend using the interactive guide. It's easy to follow and will help you every step of the way to get your Kevo lock installed correctly.
Tools You Need to Install Kevo Smart Lock
To help you get ready to install your Kevo Smart Lock, the app lets you know what tools you will need. Depending if you are replacing your a current door lock or installing a door lock for the first time on a door, Kevo will help you understand what tools are need to complete the installation.
Check Your Door Dimensions
It's important to know the dimensions of the door you plan to install the Kevo Smart Lock. The dimensions will determine the length of screws you need to install your Kevo smart lock.
Deadbolt or Not?
As part of the installation process, it's important for Kevo to know if you are planning on replacing a deadbolt lock or not. If you are, instaliing the Kevo smart lock will be relatively easy. If not, there are added steps you will need to follow to make sure you have the correct holes in your door to install Kevo.
Checking the Dimensions of Your Door
To help you check the dimensions of your door, you will need to use a ruler.
Dimensions of Your Door
It's important you find out what is the dimension of the current hole in your door where you will install your Kevo Smart Lock. If you don't have a hole, the Kevo app will show you who to install a new hole in the door and the dimensions of the hole.
Thickness of Your Door
Besides understanding the dimensions of the hole of your door, you need to understand the thickness of the door. This will help you determine the right screws to secure your Kevo Smart Lock. You will need to use a ruler to measure the thickness of your door.
Select Thickness of Your Door
There are standard thicknesses of doors: 1 3/8", 1 3/4" or Thicker than 1 3/4". All you have to do is measure your door and select the thickness that is closest to your door.
Screws to Use for Kevo Lock
Kevo offers sets of screws to use to install your Kevo smart lock. The screws are based on the thickness of your door. Once you know the thickness of your door, we recommend selecting the correct screws to use for your Kevo Smart Lock.
Is Your Door Edge Chiseled
Next, you need to know if your door is chiseled or not. If it is chiseled, make sure you can easily place your latch through the hole of the door and its flush against the door edge. If not, you will need to chiseled the door's edge to get a proper fit for you latch.
Installing Door Latch
Locate your door latch and using a screwdriver, make sure you are able to extend your latch bolt.
Centering Latch and Strike
Take your latch and place it through the hole in your door. You need to center the D-shaped hole on your latch in the door's hole. Make sure your latch bolt is extended before inserting it into the door.

The app will show you how to center the D-shaped hole on your latch.
Installing Latch
Once you center the D-Shaped hole on the door latch on your door, you need to locate the screws you need to secure your latch.
Securing Door Latch
When installing door latch, most likely you will need the short screws. However, if needed, Kevo does supply longer screws for you to use to secure the door latch.
Installing Strike on Door Frame
You will need to make sure the strike on your door frame is aligned with your door latch. If replacing a deadbolt lock on your door, more than likely the Strike on your door frame will be good to use. To be sure, you will need to line up your door latch to see if it can work in the existing strike. If all good, you can either replace the existing strike with the new Kevo strike so it looks new or just use the existing strike.
Ready to Install Exterior Assembly
This is when things will start to get a little tricky. Installing the exterior assembly will require you to thread the cord on the exterior assembly of our Kevo smart lock through the latch.
Installing Exterior Assembly
Locate the screws for securing your exterior assembly for your Kevo Smart Lock. You will need to make sure they are the correct length.
Mounting Plate for Exterior Assembly
Locate the mounting plate for our Kevo smart lock. The mounting plate is used to mount the back side or interior portion of the Kevo Smart Lock. You need to take this mounting plate and attach it to your exterior assembly using the appropriate length screws.
Threading Cord from Exterior Assembly
Prior to attaching the latch to our exterior assembly, you will need to thread the cord from the exterior assembly through the hole in your door. Make sure you thread the cord underneath the door latch.
Tools Needed for Securing Exterior Assembly
You will need only a screwdriver to secure the exterior assembly of your Kevo Smart Lock to the mounting bracket along with the proper length screws provided.
Thread Cord Through Mounting Bracket
Now that the cord for your exterior assembly has been threaded through the door latch, you have to make sure you thread it through the correct hole on your mounting bracket. The correct hole is the center hole of the mounting bracket. The diagram in the Kevo app will show you the correct hole on the mounting bracket. Once you thread the cord through the mounting bracket, you need to secure the screws attaching the mounting bracket to the exterior assembly.
Test Your Kevo Smart Lock
Once you thread the cord through the door latch and mounting bracket, you need to tighten the screws and test the door latch. Take the keys and insert into the Kevo lock to see if the door latch opens and closes easily. If the Kevo lock does not open and close smoothly, you can use the Kevo app to troubleshoot the problem.
Installing Interior Assembly
Now it's time to get your interior assembly ready for installation. First thing you need to do is remove the battery pack inside the interior assembly of your Kevo Smart Lock.
Tools for Installing Interior Assembly
You will need a Philips-head screwdriver and the small screws supplied by Kevo to install your interior assembly.
Connecting Cord to Interior Assembly
Of all the steps in the installation process of your Kevo Smart Lock, this is the most critical one for you. If you don't get the right connection, your Kevo smart lock will not operate correctly. Connecting the cord that you threaded through the door latch and mounting bracket to the interior assembly is not easy. Kevo provides you with diagrams in the app on how to connect the cord. They also provide tips on how to connect and remove the cord from your smart lock interior assembly.
Tip on Connecting Cord to Interior Assembly
On the connecting cord you will see a small lever. You can use this to connect and disconnect your cord from the interior assembly. When cord is connected, make sure you tuck the cord inside the mounting bracket prior to attaching interior assembly.
Insert Batteries
Once interior assembly has been attached to mounting bracket, you need to insert batteries into the battery pack. Then take battery pack insert into the interior assembly.
Inserting Battery Package - Door Handling
When you insert battery pack into back of interior assembly, make sure your door is open and the Kevo Smart Lock is open. You also need to hold down Program button on the Kevo interior assembly as you insert the battery pack. Once battery pack has been inserted, you will hear beeps from your lock and it will start the door handing process (.e. lock opens and closes). If the door performs successful door handing, you can move on to the next phase of the installation process. If not, you will need to follow the instructions in the Kevo app.
Secure Interior Assembly
The last part of the installation process for your Kevo smart lock is to secure your interior assembly. Using your Philips-head screwdriver and small screws, just follow the instructions in the Kevo app. Note that if you would like to unlock the window on the back of your interior assembly to get access to your batteries or program button, you will need to follow the instructions in the app to allow the window to be locked. We would recommend keep the window locked so no one can tamper with the interior assembly.
RE-Key Kevo Smart Lock
Kevo Smart locks comes with a set of keys and a smart key tool. The smart key tool is vital to how you secure your Kevo smart lock. Think of it as a way for you to generate a unique password for access to your smart lock. The Kevo smart key tool allows you to change either the keys Kevo supplied or your own keys so they are the only ones that can lock and unlock your smart locks. Once you have your Kevo smart lock installed, you can follow the Kevo app to see how to re-key your keys for your Kevo smart lock. We recommend doing this since it allows you to create a new safe way to gain access to your smart home. You should always have backup plan in case your smart lock malfunctions or you lose your phone.
Pairing Devices To Your Kevo Smart Lock
Now that your Kevo smart lock has been installed and is working properly, your last step is to pair devices to your smart lock via the Bluetooth connection. Using the Kevo app, you are able to pair multiple devices to your smart lock as well as create eKeys for guests or family members.
