ADT to offer Nest smart home products after $450M Google investment
Google has invested $450M into ADT, the home security company, in a move that will see Nest smart home devices installed by ADT technicians.
Expected to close in the third quarter of 2020, the deal could see Nest products installed with ADT systems by the end of the year. Google describes the investment as starting a "long-term, strategic partnership" with the 148-year-old security firm.

As well as hardware like cameras and smart displays, Google says it will combine Nest "services and technology" with ADT's existing product offerings. This means ADT's network of over 20,000 professional technicians will be able to sell and install devices with the Google Assistant, like Nest cameras and the Nest Hub Max smart display.
Google already offers its Nest Aware service and Nest Secure modular smart home security system, plus Nest cameras for inside and outside the home. But partnering with ADT, one of the largest security firms in the US, will see Nest products and services become available to a far larger audience. ADT says it currently has over six million customers in the US.
Rishi Chandra, VP and general manager of Google's Nest division, said on August 3: "Over time, Nest's devices, powered by Google's machine learning capabilities, will enhance ADT's security monitoring and become the cornerstone of ADT's smart home offering. The goal is to give customers fewer false alarms, more ways to receive alarm events, and better detect potential incidents inside and around the home."
Google also hopes the partnership will see the creation of new forms of smart home alerts. For example, it says "package detection" could notify a customer via their smartphone when a security camera spots a package delivered to the doorstep. ADT customers will also gain access to Nest Aware, which stores alerts and footage recorded by Nest security cameras in the cloud for 30 days.
If the partnership goes ahead as planned, Google's investment means it will own approximately 6.6 percent of ADT by the end of the third quarter of 2020. ADT says it will continue to sell its own smart home security products under the Blue by ADT brand.
