Google Maps adds new features including updated park paths
Google Maps is a wealth of detail, one that's often worth mining just for fun. Aside from giving you directions to your next locale, you can also use the app to figure out whether a restaurant is owned by women, or where to find a Covid-19 testing site. And now you can find walking paths in local parks, and more green areas neatly noted, and staircases, according to Android Police.
Google has been updating its Google Maps app fairly regularly. You can even now get transit times for subway rides, and interact live with the app by letting other riders know if the car you're in is actually busy or not, adding in detail as whether there's standing room only, for example. And if you own an EV, you can find charging stations too.
Apparently staircases are showing up now as well. Although when we did a quick search through New York City, we did not find those appearing in park maps where we know they actually are located. And you can't always get Google Maps to always route you through a park as well — even if you're asking for walking directions. But you can now see the paths that are clearly marked.
We were able to get clear walking directions in at least one instance, though, and that was in a stretch of a park in New York's downtown where cars actually can't drive.
The features may not be showing up for everyone — staircases, for example, aren't live on our version of Google Maps. But expect these details to roll out eventually to your own device.
