How much does the Goal Zero Yeti 500 cost?

The Goal Zero Yeti 500 Portable Power Station has an MSRP of $499.00 and is available on the company website, Amazon, and REI. Is that a reasonable price? We think the price is competitive, and here is why. When comparing to other 500W portable power stations, like Jackery Explorer 500 and Bluetti EB55, it's crucial to look at the following:

  • Battery technology: The type of battery used (e.g., lithium-ion vs. LiFePO4) affects longevity and safety.
  • Output options: The variety and type of outputs (USB-C PD, AC outlets, etc.) can impact the device's usefulness.
  • Solar charging capabilities: Integrated MPPT and solar charging efficiency are critical outdoor and eco-friendly charging solutions features.
  • Additional features: Water resistance, portability, and warranty should also be considered.
Based on these criteria, we found the Yeti 500 had prices and outputs similar to those of the competition. In some cases, they even had more USB and AC outputs than the others.

Performance - How did the Yeti 500 perform?

After testing the Goal Zero Yeti 500 for two months, we can say this portable power station is an excellent device if you are a camper and like to work outside and away from AC power. The Yeti 500 comes with a flap that covers all the ports on the front and back of the power station, which we have not seen in any connected portable power stations we tested. This is handy when caught in the rain while camping or hanging out in the backyard. You can quickly turn the Yeti 500 on and off and all the outlets without lifting the protected flap. We were a littler surprised though there was no way to shut down the portable power station in the app, but you could turn on and off each individual output in the app.

We found the Goal Zero app to a wealth of information. As we mentioned above, you could see the status for each output and turn them on and off in tghe app. You can also see the power station's overall power left in terms of percentages, day and hour. The app can also monitor the input power by source, temperature, and the batteries' overall battery life. The display on the unit also provides this information but only for the power source in use and the overall battery life.

Another nice feature of the Yeti 500 is its LiFePO4 batteries. Lithium Iron Phosphate or LiFePO4 batteries offer several advantages over traditional battery types, making them a popular choice for various applications. LiFePO4 batteries have a significantly longer life cycle compared to other lithium-ion batteries. They can handle more charge-discharge cycles, often exceeding 2000 to 4000 cycles without a substantial decrease in capacity, which translates to years of reliable service. They are also safer and more stable than other batteries. Due to their thermal and chemical stability, they are less prone to overheating and are unlikely to catch fire or explode, even if punctured. LiFePO4 batteries can operate in a wide range of temperatures without degrading quickly. Their high thermal stability ensures performance even under high-temperature conditions, making them suitable for outdoor and industrial applications. These batteries are also environmentally friendly, efficient, have low self-discharge, and are cost-effective due to the long lifespan and durability of LiFePO4 batteries.

Yeti 500 does not come with a light but the display screen is bright enough to help you see at night.GearBrain

During testing, we got more than 5 days' worth of power when using the Yeti 500 outside to power smart outdoor lighting and portable speakers. We also used it to power our laptops and mobile devices while sitting outside for several hours daily. Charging up the power station was quick, too.

As for the weight of the Yeiti 500, it was lighter than other portable power stations we tested. It weighs 16.09 pounds and has a handle that makes it easy to carry. We were surprised the Yeti did not have a light built-in. Many competitors' models had lights that came in handy at night. However, the Yeti 500's display is bright and will give you some illumination if needed.

Summary

After testing this connected portable power station, I can say the Goal Zero Yeti 500 Portable Power Station is an excellent choice for those engaging in outdoor activities or seeking reliable emergency preparedness solutions. With its compact design yet powerful performance we experienced while testing, I can see how this power source can run portable fridges, air pumps, pellet grills, and larger power tools, making it a versatile companion for adventurers and homeowners alike. The Yeti 500 and its upgraded LiFePO4 battery technology provide a remarkable lifespan of over ten years with 4000+ cycles, and I like how it can fully recharge in just 90 minutes. I also found it to have a durable build with UL and weatherproof ratings, which can help it withstand all temperature conditions.

It can power a wide range of devices with various output options, including USB-A, USB-C, 12V ports, and AC outlets. Its ease of use is enhanced with mobile app integration for remote monitoring and control, and it supports efficient solar charging with up to 200 W via an integrated MPPT, I can see why Yeti 500 is appealing to eco-conscious users. The simple setup process and maintenance and storage guidelines ensure long-lasting performance and reliability. And even though some might think the priced ($499) is a little high, the Yeti 500 is competitive within its category, offering similar or superior features to alternatives like the Jackery Explorer 500 and Bluetti EB55, especially in terms of battery technology, output options, and solar charging capabilities. So, in my opinion, Goal Zero's Yeti 500 is a worthwhile investment for those prioritizing durability, versatility, and eco-friendly power solutions while living off-the grid or looking for a power source for those times when the electricity goes out due to bad weather conditions any time of the year.
