Comcast Self Protection is a new security camera and that works 24/7 and broadcasts the feed to your TV
Comcast's newest security system is called Self Protection, a name that pretty clearly explains the service and new security camera that works through the company's Xfinity Home network. Not a professional offer, the new launch is very much a do-it-yourself option that lets customers buy the new camera on their own, install it — or several — and marry it to a new service that works 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Through Self Protection, people will get seven full days of recordings, continuous, that also has the capability of detecting people or motion in its range, sending an alert to mobile phones. Customers can then search through footage as well of whatever the cameras are focused on, whether that's a front porch or a backyard or inside a front hallway.
The new cameras will be able to connect to Xfinity's network immediately, much like its xFi pods, and automatically be added to the Xfinity app. The app also gives more control to the cameras and the service, letting people actually pause the internet connection to the cameras if they choose, and stop recording for privacy reasons. And customers can also control these cameras with the Xfinity Voice Remote, and also send the feed from the cameras to their TVs. People can also upgrade to Xfinity Home's professionally monitored home security service if they choose.
The new security camera is designed to work both indoors and outside, have HD video, night vision, and up to four can be connected together. Each camera will cost $120, or people can set up a payment plan for 24 months and for $5 a month. The service, which will support the 24/7 feed, will cost $10 a month, and customers do not need to sign a contract.
"A growing number of consumers are seeking easy to install home monitoring solutions to keep an eye on their packages, pets, loved ones, or simply the front door," said Kelly Barlow, senior vice president, of Comcast's Connectivity and Home in a statement. "Our new Self Protection service is built for these customers who want peace of mind knowing they can keep an eye on the things that are important to them with a service that is built using an award-winning product like Xfinity Home. Just like we did with Xfinity Flex, we want to provide our customers with our leading products in a way that they want to consume them – over the Internet and at an affordable price."
