AppleCare+ is finally worth buying with new theft and loss coverage
While not mentioned during its two-hour event, Apple quietly launched a new product that may be almost as exciting as its new iPhone: AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss.
Sure, we get it, an insurance policy doesn't have colorful apps, augmented reality and stereo sound. But for the first time you'll be able to actually recoup some of the loss if you leave your iPhone behind in a taxi or on a school bus. (We're not pointing fingers.)
The new policy is more expensive than regular AppleCare+ coverage. How much more? Well, the regular AppleCare+ policy for the new iPhone XS will cost $199, while the AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss will set you back $299. The iPhone 8, for example, will cost $129 for a regular policy, while the new insurance will set you back $199.
Both policies come with two years of technical support and coverage on the iPhone's hardware and accidental damage. You're also not getting the entire cost of the iPhone back either. There's a hefty deductible — about the price of the policy itself, starting at $199 for the iPhone 7 and all the way up to $269 for the new iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max.
Typically, iPhone owners would be able to declare the loss or theft of their smartphone on a rental or homeowner's insurance policy. Deductibles there are quite hefty as well — often hundreds of dollars.
When the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max go on pre-order next week, prices will start at $999 and stretch up to $1449 (before taxes). Another $299 may feel like another big bite one you'll have to balance against the risk of how it may feel if you leave your new iPhone on a train.
