Smart home security system Abode adds new keypad with motion sensing tech

Abode is adding a new accessory to its security line-up, the Keypad 2, an updated version which has a built-in motion sensor and LED lights that change colors so people will know the status of their abode security system just by walking past.

Abode is a do-it-yourself home security system but also supports professional monitoring for those customers who want more hands on help. There are two different kits that make up Abode's all-in-one system, including the new iota security kit that also includes a wireless hub

The keypad is also backlit — making it easier to see the keys, plus there is a rechargeable battery good for six months. People can use up to 40 different unique codes for the keypad, and it can attach to the wall with a magnetic mount making placements much easier.

Abode is also extending its professional monitoring service, Secure, to Canada — to all current and future users, save for those in Quebec. When added to the company's security products, Secure includes one-year of professional monitoring and one-year of cellular backup.

"We're constantly innovating and thinking of new ways we can enhance our already robust smart home security system," said Chris Carney, CEO of abode. "We have a healthy roadmap of new hardware like our new Keypad 2 in store for the rest of the year and beyond. We're thrilled to expand into new markets and make the full portfolio of abode features available in markets outside the United States. With professional monitoring now available, abode's security systems are among the only solutions available in Canada that customers can monitor on their own or activate professional monitoring, either "on-demand", monthly or on an annual basis without being locked into any long-term contracts."

The Abode Keypad 2 can be pre-ordered for $79 and will start shipping in August.
